Bolex Overlooking Painted Hills

1961 Paillard-Bolex H-16 Reflex
with P. Angénieux Zoom Lens
(from 35mm Kodak Slide)

MOTION PICTURE FILM

Since my youth in Venice,
I have had a love for this tool... this art... this history.

Recently, I restored a 1950 Bolex (non-reflex), gave it a 'baby' brother (left), and have used them to shoot lens tests and experiments, taking them on the road.

This immersive medium is also a preservation vessel.

I also help assess
collections at a film archive.

It is a pleasingly voyeuristic ritual... looking into the past at anonymous faces, searching for clues, traveling
through time.

CHRYSALIS

Random enjoyment.
Clarifying disruption.
Flow and order.

Shot on two Swiss-made Bolex H-16 cameras over three recent summers around Oregon and Northern California.

Do you recognize the locations?

This video was assembled in Final Cut Pro, but all dissolves and effects were created
in-camera
.
